ABC Results, 2012 Quarter 1 (January - March 2012)

In February 2012, I wrote about the ABC’s extensively for most of the publications (2011 Quarter 4). Analyzing the details, and also comparing it to it’s competitors. For these results, click on the link to see all these posts.

The latest results (Quarter 1 for 2012, January - March 2012) were recently released, and instead of uploading the results with each magazine in a different post, I decided to rather give a summary of the main magazines I focus on in my blog, and give a brief overview.

I will only be covering magazines that actually released new results in the above period.

How does it work; We compare the latest period (Jan - March 2012) with the corresponding period (Jan - March 2011). I will then also look at the last period, which is October - December 2011 to give a clearer picture.

ENTERTAINMENT CATEGORY

TV Plus English - Subscription TV Plus Afrikaans - Subscription

  • TV Plus Afrikaans declined with 12,4%, from 46 107 down to 40 385. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 41 551.
  • TV Plus English also showed a decline (10,2%) from 52 504, down to 47 140. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 48 211.

FAMILY INTEREST CATEGORY

Drum English - Subscription Huisgenoot - Subscription You South Africa - Subscription

  • DRUM climbed slightly (5,3%) from 131 107, up to 138 007. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 138 479
  • Huisgenoot dropped from 313 581, down to 298 262, which is a 5,3% decline. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 283 355. So if you look at Huisgenoot term-to-term, they’ve already improved their sales. Who knows? Maybe the “new look” Huisgenoot that launched in February, contributed to the higher sales?
  • YOU showed a very slight decline of 1%, from 182 909, down to 181 071. The same as with Huisgenoot, You showed a recorded ABC of 172 403 for the period Oct - Dec 2011, so they’re also already showing better results than they did the previous term.

HEALTH CATEGORY

Shape South Africa - Subscription

  • SHAPE felt a big knock of 28,6%, from 44 981, down to 32 115. That being said, for the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 28 845, so they’re also already performing better period-to-period.

HOME CATEGORY

House and Leisure - Subscription Tuis - Subscription

  • Food & Home Entertaining fell from 38 116 down to 32 720 (14,2%). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 34 432.
  • House & Leisure is just climbing and climbing! The jumped from 41 646 up to 43 605 (4,7%). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 38 338.
  • Tuis / Home went from 77 924 to 80 457, which is a 3,3% increase. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 76 909.

LEISURE CATEGORY

Rolling Stone South Africa - Subscription

  • This is the first time that Rolling Stone South Africa are showing ABC’s, and for the latest period (Jan - March 2012), they are recording an ABC of 15 889, which is not too shabby. Unfortunately, once you go into the detail and breakdown, you see the real results… They have 166 subscribers, and have sold, on average, only 3 540 copies on shelf. This brings their Total Paid circulation to 3 706. But where does the rest come from? The rest is mainly “Controlled Free Distribution”, and in particular, 11 833 is for “Bulk Requested”. Where exactly these 11 833 were sent to, I’m not sure, but basically this is freely distributed copies. I feel really sorry for the Rolling Stone team, because it’s really a top quality publication that deserves to have all 15 899 as sold copies, and not just 3 540.

MALE CATEGORY

FHM South Africa - Subscription Men's Health South Africa - SubscriptionPlayboy South Africa - SubscriptionPopular Mechanics South Africa - Subscription

  • FHM has fallen from 59 961 down to 47 168 (21,3% decline). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 38 873, so this means that they’re already performing much better when looking at the last two periods. Seems like they got rid of Hagen Engler (ex-editor) too quickly, because in the end, he must have been doing something right for it to climb again…
  • Men’s Health South Africa increased with 6,3% from 70 439 to 74 903. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 66 828. Definitely on the up and up…
  • Playboy South Africa is also new on the ABC, so they can’t compare it to the same period in 2011. But for the current period (Jan - March 2012) they recorded 13 965. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period they recorded an ABC of 12 428. The biggest difference comes from their copy sales that have improved by 2 200 copies (great news) and then their digital copies which are now standing at 2 497 (this is extremely high for a South African publication!). Because of these great results, they decreased their “Free Circulation” from 3 177 previously, to only 1 847 this period.
  • Popular Mechanics went from 47 834 to 50 787 (6,2% increase). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 50 585.

SPORTS AND HOBBY CATEGORY

Sports Illustrated South Africa - Subscription

  • Sports Illustrated showed a decline of 23,8%, dropping from 26 130 down to 19 899. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 19 416. So even though they are significantly lower, they are still on par when looking at the last 2 periods.
  • SA Rugby had a small increase from 20 583, up to 21 187 (2,9% increase). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 20 349.
  • I think it’s worth mentioning that SA Rugby (21 187) is now a bit higher when looking at Sports Illustrated’s ABC (19 899). But once again, when you go into the detail, the picture looks a bit different. 19 899 of Sports Illustrated’s ABC is made up of “Sales” (Subscriptions- 5 763; Copy sales - 12 761; Digital Editions - 325; Third Party Bulk Sales - 1 050 = 19 899). They didn’t claim anything under “Free Circulation” (a Media24 rule).
  • When you go into detail with SA Rugby, the picture is a bit different. 15 920 of it’s total 21 187 ABC is made up of “Sales” (Subscriptions - 2 143; Copy Sales - 11 887; Digital Editions - 570; Back Issues sold for more than 50% cover price - 1 282; Back Issues sold for below 50% - 38 = 15 920. The remaining 5 267 is made up of “Free Circulation”.

TRAVEL CATEGORY

Getaway - Subscription go! - Subscription

  • Getaway decreased from 60 366 down to 54 585 (9,6%). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 54 519. The last 2 periods are very on par.
  • SA Country Life decreased with 16,5%, from 43 429 down to 36 246. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 33 431. It’s interesting to note that their subscriptions jumped from 2 699 up to 4 174 (in just 3 months) and their copy sales on shelf jumped from 19 696 up to 24 179 (in just 3 months). Definitely worth a mention.
  • Weg! / Go! showed a very small decline from 84 348 down to 83 592 (0,9%). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 75 781. When looking at the last 2 periods only, they’ve showed a very nice jump in circulation.

WOMAN’S GENERAL

Cosmopolitan South Africa - Subscription Destiny - Subscription Elle South Africa - Subscription Fairlady - Subscription Ideas - Subscription Marie Claire South Africa - Subscription SARIE - Subscription True Love - Subscription Women's Health South Africa - Subscription

  • Cosmopolitan declined from 91 213 down to 85 724. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 81 406.
  • Destiny increased from 26 024 up to 30 321 (16,5%). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 30 082.
  • ELLE decreased a huge 26,5%, from 40 906 down to 30 083. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 38 891. This should be a bit worrying (especially also in the light of weekly-competitor Grazia that launched last week). The biggest decline came from their on-shelf copy sales that dropped from 31 407 (Oct - Dec 2011 period), all the way down to 21 988.
  • Fairlady fell from 68 783 down to 51 302 (25,4%). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 48 789. I’m happy for them that they’re already showing an increase when looking at the last 2 periods. Hopefully the fact that they brought down their cover price in April will also help boost their sales for the next ABC period (April - June 2012)
  • Good Housekeeping / Goeie Huishouding is just growing from strenght to strenght. The first time they reported was in the Oct - Dec 2011 period, with a great 59 814. In the latest period (Jan - March 2012) they recorded an ABC of 71 760. A small part of this increase comes from their subscribers and copy sales that have increased (4 666 more copies), but the bulk (7 280 copies) comes from “Free Circulation” and Back Issues that were claimed.
  • Idees / Ideas stayed relatively the same climbing slightly from 85 569 to 85 679 (0,1% increase). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 88 452.
  • Marie Claire went from 36 501 to 37 285 (2,1% increase). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 37 439.
  • O, The Oprah Magazine declined from 46 720 down to 41 267 (11,7%). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 38 493.
  • Rooi Rose went from 108 790 down to 104 533. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 112 905.
  • SARIE fell from 134 939 down to 120 402 (10,8% decline). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 114 452.
  • True Love went down with 9,5% from 87 647, down to 79 309. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 81 963.
  • Woman and Home went from 93 814, down to 86 160 (8,2% decline). For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 104 617. When looking at just the last 2 periods, there’s a massive drop from 104 617 (Oct - Dec 2011) down to 86 160 (Jan - March 2012). This big drop comes from their on-shelf copy sales that dropped from 89 280 all the way down to 70 625…
  • Women’s Health increased from 72 700 up to 78 791. For the Oct - Dec 2011 period, they recorded an ABC of 59 860. Nice recovery, girls!
